The idea to start The Palm Beach School of Business Etiquette came to me at lunch one day.
While I was enjoying a nice lunch with a local business owner at a nice restaurant in Boca Raton, four younger businessmen were seated at a nearby table.
They did not know that the gentleman dining with me was considering hiring one of them for an executive position in his firm. It would have been a nice promotion for the young man, but one he would never get.
My companion, having the opportunity to candidly observe how the young man conducted himself in public, decided not to make him an offer. He told me that the young man simply would not fit the image he maintained for his business. He would not allow himself or his business to be damaged by the young man's lack of manners.
That got me to thinking about these young men, one of whom I knew. He had grown up in a nice home, with educated parents. Somehow, however, they had failed to teach him manners. Perhaps they had tried, perhaps not.
One can pick up manners by watching others, but how often does that really happen? Seldom. And when it does, how do you know the people you are watching are doing it correctly? You don't!
It dawned on me that there was a need for people to learn etiquette in a more formal setting. Hence, The Palm Beach School of Etiquette.
